An enjoyable collection of four stories that left me wanting more. The authors are all skilled writers, who tell an engaging tale. Most stories reference other characters and races, building on a world filled with rich cultures. The characters -- orces, greyshalks, humans, and giants -- are all interesting, and the so-called "disgusting" is balanced with comic touches."No Tusks" notably cracked me up. The greyshalks and giant were endearing, despite being a tough bunch. "Unerring," the flash piece about an enchanted arrow in flight, seems a little out of place in the collecting inasmuch as it isn't specific to this world. Still, it is fascinating and beautifully written, so I'm glad for its inclusion.
Half the book's content is comprised of the author bios and cross-sales, including the excerpt of Tomlinson's "The Wererat's Tale III." Definitely check it out; it may be next on your reading list.
A couple of the illustrations were MIA and hope that's corrected. Totally dug Dan Harding's cover art.

No Tusks, A Kudekah to Remember and Mungo the Undying were all great stories, but the so-called "excerpt" of The Wererat's Tale III The Collar of Perdition was five chapters long and comprised nearly half of the total page count, which I was quite disappointed by. I'd have much rather either had a couple more stories or a shorter page count as this felt like nothing more than a attempt at padding the page count.
I really enjoyed this! Each of the four stories pulls it's own weight and then some. My favorite was the last story that was told from the perspective of an Arrow from the time it was sitting in the quiver, in the middle of a fight, to it it slaying its target. The story was only a few pages long, but I think I said ,"Holy @&#^" on every one of them.
Okay, I knew I would like this book before I even bought it - I mean, cutie pie orcs are on the cover. Turns out I actually loved it. This is a collection of novellas featuring an array of usual bad guys. This includes orcs - who are pretty wonderfully gross, greyshalks - intelligent, spiritual and devious sasquatch-like crittters, and giants - not known for their general smarts. Each story is told from the point of view of one character in a species but the stories all intersect with the others so that the reader is aware of consequences from actions taken in earlier narratives. My unexpectedly favorite character turned out to be the giant. He had a particularly practical kind of wisdom I generally associate with well-travelled seniors and really great dogs. And, while he eats orc babies without a second thought, he has a certain brand of charm. I highly recommend this book. Pure fun!
This was the first book I've read from Shane's Abyss Walker series and it was a great intro to the world. I love the stories...good pacing that kept me reading and wanting to find out what happened next. Definitely going to read the rest of the series.
The fantasy short story collection, A Walk in the Abyss, brings it's readers five tales from the point of view of the monsters, whether they be giants, Greyshalks (Think Bigfoots), or orcs. The contrasting writing styles blend well together, and in this collaboration the characters live in the same universe. The stand out tale is No-Tusks, by Paul Genesse.
My only slight peeve is the inclusion of an excerpt from a novella A Wererat's Tale III. As I wasn't up on A Wererat's Tale I and II, I was lost. I would have preferred a stand alone story instead. However, the other five tales redeem A Walk in the Abyss as an exceptionally great read. 5 Stars.A Walk In The Abyss
Last month a CONduit I attended the release party for `A Walk In The Abyss'. `A Walk In The Abyss' is a collection of stories that take place in Shane Moore's Abyss Walker world. The stories are `No-Tusk' by Paul Genesse which tells the tale of a small but very devious Orc. `A Kudekah to Remember' by Paul Genesse and Shane Moore which tells the tale of a young Sasquatch coming of age. `Mungo The Undying' by Patrick M. Tracy, the story of a Giant in servitude to a Wizard. `Unerring' by Patrick S. Tomlinson, a flash fiction from an arrows point of view. As well as `The Wererat's Tale The Collar of Perdition an Excerpt from An Abyss Walker Novella' by Patrick S. Tomlinson. All stories that are full of action, humor and wonder for any fan of Fantasy. I recommend `A Walk In The Abyss' highly and would like to thank the authors of it for the very fun `Monster Games' release party they threw.
